A new feature is being rolled out on Virgin's TiVo boxes. If you're watching the SD version of a channel and press the blue button, it will change to the HD version if available. No word yet if or when this will arrive on the V6 boxes.
Virgin Media are also retiring the old V and V+ boxes, which means the entire network will be TiVo this year.
Disappointed to hear it is only on the old TiVo boxes, not the new TiVo's. Maybe soon though....
ReplyDeleteHi this is also on the v6 box.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget, you can get the v6 box free from vm.

ReplyDeleteOnly SD V boxes are being withdrawn, V+ & V HD are unaffected.
ReplyDeleteI have a V6 box it does not work for me
ReplyDeleteJust tried pressing blue. Not working here. 27/05/18
ReplyDeleteI can’t remember if there’s a good reason why they still have an SD and HD version of the same channels. I’d like to know. Hopefully we don’t also end up with 3 versions of every channel with 4K. And the other annoying thing is that every time I set the quick guide to show only my favourites (the HD channels), it forgets that setting every time I put the box in standby. That seriously gets on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteGood to see they are starting the process to end SD. Once all the SD boxes are removed from peoples homes, they can stop all the SD versions of programs also in HD.
ReplyDeleteSD channels are useful for people who record a lot of stuff as recordings take up less disk space, so they may keep them for that.
ReplyDeleteI think the real reason for retiring the old boxes may be more to do with stopping piracy.
ReplyDeleteMine started working today
ReplyDeleteIf they wanted to stop piracy they would need to also retire the V+ & V HD boxes, which they are not doing. The SD V boxes are being withdrawn because Virgin are looking to start switching SD channels over to MPEG4 compression following the completion of the HD ones earlier this year, which the SD boxes cannot decode.
ReplyDeleteWhen these boxes have been retired, all set-top boxes on the network will be MPEG4 compliant including the V HD & Samsung V+ HD (the Scientific Atlanta variant was retired last year).
