Sky and Virgin Media agree new deal

Still no word on Sky Atlantic on Virgin, but the Sky Cinema and Sky Sports 4K channels are coming to the V6 boxes in 2020. Full story on this and additional Sky on demand and on-the-go services at https://www.whathifi.com/news/virgin-tv-customers-to-get-sky-4k-content-in-2020

This is excellent news, and will probably secure me a Virgin customer for the foreseeable future. I just hope they implement Sky Sports UHD content as a separate channel on the EPG (Like BT Sport 4k UHD) rather than a red-button experience like Eurosport's UHD coverage of Rolland Garros.

The main reason is I can record programmes on BT Sports 4K, but I cannot record something that's only available via the red-button. I often record Formula-One from Sky Sports, avoid the result, and watch "as-live" later in the day. It would be great to do that in UHD.

If formula 1 is available in UHD to Sky customers I don't see why Virgin Media customers can't get it too as its been owned by Liberty Media since 2017.

That sounds logical in theory. However, when Liberty bought F1 from Bernie, all existing broadcasting contracts remained in place. So Sky having exclusive rights before Liberty took over, means they still have exclusive rights afterwards. (Unless Liberty choose to terminate the contract with Sky and suffer the consequences of that).

So sadly, just because Liberty own F1, and Liberty own Virgin Media, it's not automatic that Virgin Media customers suddenly get F1 coverage in UHD. It's still up to Sky to provide that content to Virgin.

How Liberty's ownership of F1 impacts the next round of TV rights however will be interesting to see...

Have you heard any update on this? We're now a fair way into 2020, and no sign of Sky Sports in UHD yet.

I've heard nothing further on this, which is very disappointing given that the announcement was made almost a year ago. It's an odd agreement that takes so long to actually materialise - why announce it if was so far from being delivered??
