Virgin Media HD petition

Enough! Time for a call to arms!
I've created an online petition calling for Virgin Media to increase their high definition services (both channels and on demand programming). The petition will be sent to Neil Berkett's office at the end of the summer, so please spare a few seconds and sign up at

I think you would get a lot more takers if they didn't have to spend a minimum of $2 (recommended $10) in order to air their views.

Carol - the service is free (from what I can see). Where do you get the $2 from?

When I logged in and made my comments a dialog box appeared asking for subscriptions - I clicked away from the site as I was not prepared to pay for giving my views. However I have just received an email from the petition site saying that my vote had been accepted.

Once you get to the pay bit just shutdown your browser. You don't have to pay.
I made my vote anyway.

Banner at the top of the screen states your vote has been recorded but then automatically jumps to a donation screen which you can click away from.your vote is still counted.

Ok. Sorry about that - you aren't made aware that they're asking for donations when you set up a petition with them. I guess they have to make a profit somewhere along the line - a shame they're not more up front about it on their home page. Sorry if anyone feels cheated - I certainly don't profit from it in any way.

nialli,
i don't think anyone thinks you made any sort of finiancial gain from the site.
In fact i have been too many similar petition sites especially the smaller ones and it seems standard practice to either request money or forward you to their sponsors website.
I think if VM take heed of the petition than its all of us who will gain with more HD.
Great Blog..keep it going.it a great source of info.

Duly signed with the following comment: "Virgin Media's commitment to providing HD programming to its customers is far behind that of its main competitor. I understand that Virgin has chosen to push on demand content ahead of dedicated HD channels, but the quantity and consistency of the on demand offerings is dreadful. Obviously I'd love to see dedicated HD channels on Virgin Media, but more COMPLETE series on demand would be a big start."

Nialli - have you advertised this over at Digital Spy?

The more coverage this gets, the better. I'd imagine we need the number of signatures to be in the thousands for VM to even raise an eyebrow.

thanks for setting this up - just registered my frustration on how we are being treated by virgin in terms of their HD offering.

Bikenutt - there's a thread promoting the petition on the V+ forum on DS and similar on AV forums and Cable Forum. Except for some typical DS forum cynicism (one poster even suggested the poll was a "con") the reaction has been generally favourable.
I agree that anything less than a thousand will have little impact with VM. After 24 hours signatures are up to 250; not sure how many more we'll get this week. Incidentally, this blog averages 350 visitors a day - when I mentioned this to the VM guys they were pretty stunned that HD on cable was attracting so much attention.

Just goes to show they're completely out of touch with their customers (current AND future!)

Silly people they are. They have 262000 V+ subscribers. Surely it follows some of them must be watching HD! Nice petition. One thing I was wondering about the other day, do VM actually keep tabs on number of people watching VOD stuff in HD for definite?

"...do VM actually keep tabs on number of people watching VOD stuff in HD for definite?"

Judging by the amount of HD on VOD and the appalling way episodes within series are added, I would hardly think so. On top of that there have been whole series where they have just put up 3 episodes, you wait and wait.... and wait - then suddenly the whole lot is gone.

Even one of Alan Sugar's apprentices could not be as bad.
