Sky Movies HD - believe in MUCH better...

For me, much as I love my footie in HD now, Sky's movie channels and Film4 were always going to be the most frequently watched  of the new high def channels this year. I watch two or three movies a week, and the difference between the Sky SD and HD movies channels is amazing. It may not quite be Blu Ray but it's still tremendous, better than my upscaling DVD player and sooooo much better than the SD variants.
Last night I watched the nineties sci fi satire Starship Troopers and the PQ was incredible, especially towards the end of the film where the SD broadcasts struggle with the explosions and alien hoards. Brilliant brilliant brilliant.
Other movies I'd recommend currently showing are the Back To The Future trilogy, the Alien films, any of the Coen brothers or Tarantino movies (Kill Bill vols 1 and 2 are particularly stunning), Terminators 1 and 2 (the first just to see how fake some of the effects in the first one now look) and all four of the Indiana Jones films. Does anyone else have movies that they've now watched in HD and would recommend for sheer PQ alone?
Unfortunately, the measley disc in my V+ means I can only store a handful of HD movies at any one time, but you all know that...

Basically agree with ya (Terminator 3 looked good in HD too, not far off the BluRay at all).

I won't be watching any Alien films on it though, saving that for a BluRay fest on the new box set next month, so will save some drive space there!!!

If you haven't seen 2001 on BluRay, DO, or if it comes on SciFi HD or something on VM catch in. IMO - best non-HD filmed film to be upscaled to 1080, EVER.

@lee - totally agree, 2001 on blu ray blew me away...and for a film from 1968!! Just shows what the studios can produce if they really want too! (before anyone says I know there a lot of factors that affect the quality when remastering old films to blu ray and not just whether they can be bothered but there are many cases that laziness and/or greed seems to affect the quality of the blu ray produced).

I also agree that I will be saving the Alien films for blu ray - along with back to the future...im a sucker for a boxset haha

also cant wait for Apocalypse Now - I hear they are really taking the time and effort to give it the treatment it deserves!

I could go on all day talking about films still to hit the shelves but this was really a post about Sky Movies HD so I will just say that the difference in quality between HD and SD for most films I have watched has been remarkable - great £7 spent when I throw in the Sports as well which has similar if not better quality upgrade...

Oh great...our bill comes through £14 higher than we expected, because we were promised our upgrade of the whole (VIP) package would mean we wouldn't get the charge, now we have.

Looks like back down to 20MB and no HD for movies or sports then. (partly due to cost, and partly due to being lied to in order to get us to upgrade)

re 2001 - it was filmed on 65mm stock, and this is of much higher defintion than 1080i - so won't have been upscaled. Most films are getting new prints from the original negatives in order to display their best on HD tv and Blu-ray.

Three Kings in HD, recently on ITV/CH4(?). Catch it if you can as the HD PQ/cinematography was mesmerising... as well as being a stonking good film
