TiVo pricing update: great news!

TiVo install is free in April for existing customers!

What's more, VIP's (50 & 100 only) are getting the TiVo monthly charge waived. It will appear on the bill, but we will get a bigger discount to cover.

Thanks to Virgin Media for listening, and a reminder: do not contact VM until the launch email comes out. They cannot process any orders before the launch day.

wow, ok. so it's still the £149 I'm guessing, but no £40 install or monthly bill (for how long?)

That IS a good offer for customers! Despite being called a whinger for daring to question their pricing structure for us high-paying customers, they've ended up doing what I argued anyway :p

I got a call last night from VM to ask how happy I am with my tivo.
(The usual pre launch survey for early adopters.)
The lady said the launch is now the 18th April.

Do you get to keep your existing equipment? That's the only way I'd part with £149.

Unknown said...

After this, I may just accept that offer.

My SA V+ is aging a bit now too.

Square eyes said...

Don't forget guys the equipment that you have does still belong to VM, the only way you can keep it, is by having it installed in another room for £5.60 per month.

If you decide that you do not wish to have the box put in another room, it will be taken back by VM

The 40 quid for someone to spend 2 minutes pluging a box in and making sure it powers up is not what erks me. It's the 150 quid (for something I wont own) and ongoing charge on top.
Maybe the smaller unit will be more sensibly priced.

This will probably swing it for me!!! I was not happy at the £40 install. Roll on Tivo!!

Jez24 said...

Sounds like as a 50mg customer, I might not need to pay the £3 either. If thats the case, you had me at Tivo!!!

Tom

the £149 is marked on my bill as an activation fee. And as for 2 min to install I am affraid not. It took over an hour to install by the time the guy had spured off a cable from the router unpacked downloaded software to the box set up and checked the outside box wiring while he was on site.

Matt said...

I was one of the lucky 1000. Installation is a lot more complicated with the Tivo. The VM installer was with us for about 2 hrs waiting for the box to initialise/download/update etc.

If you do go for the Tivo deal make sure you have plenty of tea and biscuits.

the no installation fee makes it slightly more appealing - can anyone tell me what needs to actually connected with Tivo - I have a disaster zone of wires behind my my home cinema setup - and I mean adisaster zone!
Is it a case of unoplugging the the wires and the replugging in the Tivo - or are there ethernet connections involved etc?
any info would be appreciated
I am slowly changing from a boo boy to slightly more interested in Tivo!!

HOWEVER the TIVO box has a LIFETIME GUARANTEE through VM. It breaks you get another PDQ.

So... £149 already budgeted for. £3 ok as I hope this adaptive thinking machine will find me more things to watch and suggest, so I won't take the easy route and pay Mr.Murdoch for Sky Movies (£28.50 saving).

@ Carryonvending - cunning!

*Hours to set up* ?!?
"spured off a cable from the router" ? I just have a single piece of coax from the wall socket to the TV cabinet, so there shouldn't be anything that needs doing, right... ?

My Tivo replaced an existing connected V+ box.

Actual physical effort was minimal, unconnect cable connection/power supply, replace with new power supply (Tivo has an external adapter) and reconnect cable.

Installer then had to notify call centre of MAC address, I am guessing to allow the box on to the network, and in my case switch Sky Sports HD from V+ to Tivo.

Box then performed a number of software reboots/updates/reboots. I am guessing this was because I had an early machine so there were a number of updates to be performed.

Final task was to set video/audio settings and check applications (YouTube) work.

I thought that the TIVO box had its own dedicated cable line and didn't just run off the existing cables, hence the extra time needed to install a new line?

How is £149 fee paid? There and then credit card or does it just go on to your next bill?

Square eyes said...

You can pay the £149 either way on a card or via your bill, its up to you

Square eyes said...

@Tom Chiverton

The box will replace you existing box, so no there will be no additional cable required

Sorry Square Eyes, as your the man in the know, as I'm a VIP50 customer, when I get TIVO in my front room, am I able to put my V+ Box in the bedroom replacing my current V HD box and return the V HD box? At no extra cost?

Also, I keep reading about VIP100. I thought there was only VIP20 and 50. Can anyone confirm the cost of VIP100 compared to VIP50 (I cant even remember what it is I pay on VIP50!!).

I assume the only difference between the 2 packages is the broadband....

Im thinking if the price wasnt too high I may upgrade to VIP100 when I book TIVO which I assume would mean I would get the broadband installed for free also?????

Square eyes said...

@Streaky

Yes you can change the V+ for the standard box, just ket the sales team or customer care guys know or if you have arranged an install already let the engineer know that is what you want to do.

The difference for the VIP100's is the broadband - the cost will be roughly the same as you pay now for the VIP50.

All good news - IF TRUE!

Not that I am calling you guys ill informed, but VM to tend to move the goal posts as if on wheels.

No doubt we will see on the 11th or 14th (someone posted the latter - see what I mean?)

Getting quite excited now, the nearer we get.

@Carryonvending

Just so you are aware

I actually work for VM, so I am not ill informed.

@ Square Eyes - what's your Knowledge on the official date we can sign up for TIVO? I have heard 11th, 14th and 18th? At this stage what are you led to believe it is?

(I say at this stage as I know it could well change)

What part of "Not that I am calling you guys ill informed, but VM to tend to move the goal posts as if on wheels" - Don't you understand"!

Please don't take my words in vain - Whether you work for VM or not!

I am very pleased with all of Square Eyes comments and posts. I just wish I could spell better!

Richard said...

@mike... for clarity as you are half right.

a single cable comes into the house. this has an amount of bandwidth for different services, typically internet and video(TV).
with tivo, they have reserved dedicated bandwidth for tivo internet services. this means that any internet use on tivo does not impact your broadband usage.

you don't need any extra cabling as this is all in the background.

Also as has been pointed out elsewhere, the install is a straight box swap with activation and downloads going on to initialise the box. the install has got much quicker than it was (so my engineer told me) was more than an hour is not sub 1 hour.
most of the time is spend twiddling thumbs as the box downloads its updates.

Carryonvending said...

RICHARD

Perfect post, thanks for clearing that up. Makes sense as to the posts saying installations are not that quick.

SQUARE EYES - if you thought I was knocking you in particular - not the case. Sorry if you took my comments wrongly - perhaps we are even now.
Have a nice weekend and and even better TIVO Launch!

So the 11th has arrived and no promised email offering me a tivo. Also no official email confirming the date changed. Very poor from VM.

I know people on here have commented that they have heard the date has changed, but i'd like to be informed by VM directly.

I've had to lodge two complaints with them in the last week. Let's not make this a third one please!

Gah! I don't know what to do now. I had intended to wait for the cheaper 500GB box, but with no discounts that would cost £126 over a year (£49.95 + £40 + (12 x £3)). As I can order the 1TB box this month for only £14 more, it seems daft not to do that.

RyanM said...

i've not had the email but called 0800 052 0781, said the email was on the phone i was calling from so couldn't read it....

install booked for wednesday 13th!
