Have you tried the multiple output resolution settings for your TV? I had my TiVo set for 720p for SD and 1080i for HD which made switching between the two slow and jerky as the TV would "ping" and adjust each time. I've now switched back to 720p for both and it's back to being a smooth operator. Probably more my TV than the TiVo, but it was particularly annoying when the TiVo menus switch to SD as you go past the initial HD screens.

It does seem we are in a whole new world of having to micro manage the video output settings. I hate to think how Mr & Mrs average is going to cope! Prehaps they are still blisfully unaware living in scartland.
Noted during testing but obviously never fixed!
I've just added my Onkyo A/V receiver into the mix, so I'm now getting the output from the TiVo upscaled to 1080p by that. I'm yet to work out whether this is actually better or worse than going "native" to the TV.
To be honest, I'm just confused - I'm not an expert, but I don't think I'm quite the "Mr & Mrs average" that Jez24 mentioned, though!
How do you set different settings for sd and hd? Or do you mean selecting only the 720 & 1080 options.
I've done that but for some reason my tv still shows 720 when watching hd channels, which is a bit weird.
@NeilG: yes, that's what I mean. On my Toshiba TV though it's a bit of a clunky switch between the different outputs so I've gone back to just 720p for all now, but if I'm settling down for several hours of HD I'll switch it over to 1080i. To be honest, the difference on my 32in TV isn't that noticable.
I have mine set to output 1080i all the time. The switching between resolutions did not make my TV happy.
